SUMMARY:Black Histories Erased: Redressing Our Knowledge Gaps Panel
DESCRIPTION:Black history is all too often one that is centred upon Black trauma. While it is important to acknowledge and understand the legacy of slavery, it should not be the single narrative told. A plethora of Black histories exist but have for too long been marginalized, or erased altogether not just from the annals of history but also our children’s education.\nThe US State of Florida and its state legislature for example have been on a crusade to rewrite education laws, policies and academic standards that forbids teachers from discussing anything that could make students “feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress for actions, in which he or she played no part” – in other words, teachers should not talk about subjects including white privilege and institutional racism.\nThese renewed efforts to erase Black history are detrimental if we are to move forward and rebuild equitable systems by design. It is these Black histories which tell us stories of Black brilliance, innovation, culture, identity, community, joy and belonging.
